Henry Shoemaker1,2

b. circa 1731, d. 18 July 1797
FatherSimon Shoemaker1,3,4,2
MotherAnna Elisabetha Kless2,3
Henry Shoemaker was born circa 1731 in Germany.1,4 He was the son of Simon Shoemaker and Anna Elisabetha Kless.1,3,4,2 He married Barbara Kepner.5 He died on 18 July 1797 in Muncy, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Muncy, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1

Research Note:

Simon Shoemaker was the father of three Shoemaker brothers Jacob, Henry and Charles who immigrated to Berks County, Pennsylvania from Germany sometime around 1750. However, several secondary sources incorrectly conclude that these Shoemaker brothers were the grandsons of the Quaker German immigrant Jacob Shoemaker of Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. While other elements of those compliations can be verified by other primary sources, this connection to the Germantown Shoemaker family is in error. Unfortunately this error has been perpetuated broadly in a number of other compilation and now online media to include the family tree on Ancestry.com.6,7,8
Henry Shoemaker and his brother Charles were living in Windsor Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1767 when they first appear in the tax records. Henry operated a tavern and inn in a large stone house he built there in 1768. The structure was located on The Kings Highway which followed the Schyukill River from Philadelphia, through Reading, and continued into the widerness over the Blue Mountains. Shoemakersville was laid out around the inn. Henry and Charles also operated a grist mill and a tannery in the vicinity. Henry sold the stone house to his brother Charles who lived there until his death in 1820.9,10,11,12,13,14
Henry served as a sub-lieutenant iin the Berks County militia in 1777 during the Revolutionary War. He was one of seven sub-lieutenants from Berks County who sent 350 wagon loads of supplies to the army at the time of the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and the wintering at Valley Forge.15,11
Henry was living in Bethel Township, Berks County, in 1783 when he purchased 53 acres of land in Muncy Township, Northumberland County. He and his family were living in Muncy Township by 1786 when he purchased an additional 311 acres of land in Muncy Township. Muncy Township became part of the newly formed Lycoming County in 1795.16,17,18,11 He erected first a saw mill to cut lumber and then a grist mill on the Allwood property where a mill had previously operated. The grist mill was still opearting in 1900.17,19 He was appointed a Justice in Northumberland County in 1784.19
