Research Note:

Simon Shoemaker was the father of three Shoemaker brothers Jacob, Henry and Charles who immigrated to Berks County, Pennsylvania from Germany sometime around 1750. However, several secondary sources incorrectly conclude that these Shoemaker brothers were the grandsons of the Quaker German immigrant Jacob Shoemaker of Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. While other elements of those compliations can be verified by other primary sources, this connection to the Germantown Shoemaker family is in error. Unfortunately this error has been perpetuated broadly in a number of other compilation and now online media to include the family tree on Ancestry.com.11,12,13
Jacob may have been the Jacob Schumacher who immigrated to Pennsylvania aboard the Ship Edinburgh in 1748.14
Jacob was a taxpayer in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the years 1754, 1756, and 1757. He was a schoolteacher there.8 He appears on the tax lists for Windsor Township, Berks County, in 1760.15 He was an innkeeper in Windsor Township in 1765.8 He moved to Reading, Berks County, in 1765 where he was a "cordwainer" or a shoemaker who makes new shoes from new leather which is in the British tradition is distinct from a cobbler who repaired shoes.8,16 Jacob selected as Sheriff of Berks County in 1768 and remained in that role for most of his remaining life.8
Jacob served as a Private in the 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion from January 1777 to 1778 during the Revolutionary War.2

Alternatively, it is possible that Maria Christina, born 1759, died before her father's death in 1783 and that Mary Shoemaker Rau and Christina Shoemaker mentioned in the 1788 estate settlement are additional daughters of Jacob.3,4,5
