     John Shoemaker was born say 1774. He was the son of Charles Shoemaker and Maria Kepner.1 He married Elizabeth Huy, daughter of Jacob Huy and Anna Maria Gernant.2,3 He died circa 1814 in Tarlton, Salt Creek Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, soon after returning from service in the War of 1812.1,4,5
     John Shoemaker was living in Windsor Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1800.6 John was the "first man who entered land in Salt Creek Township," Pickaway County, Ohio. He went from Pennsylvania to Ohio in the spring of 1801, and he entered a patent for land in May of that year and returned to Pennsylvania. He received the patent dated 20 Apr 1802, signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison, for land in Pickaway County. He returned to Ohio in 1806, presumably shortly after he married Elizabeth Huy. The first frame building erected in Salt Creek Township was the dwelling of John Shoemaker located within the villiage of Tarlton.7

     John Kepner was blind and educated at the Blind Institute in Philadelphia for two years. According to Sidener, John lived with his first cousin Sophia Shoemaker Mohr in Berks County and was a broom-maker who was "very efficient and worked in a room over the wagon shed." He was to have had a Braille Bible which he enjoyed reading.1,3,4 He was living with his half-brother Solomon in Milford Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, in 1850.3 He was living with his half-brother Benjmain Kepner in Nora Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, by 1870.4,5
