b. before 1755
ChartsAncestry of David Kipp Melat
Adam Urey was born before 1755.2 He married Catherine Yockey, daughter of Christian Yockey and Maria Catharina Christ.1
Adam Urey and Catherine Yockey were living in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, as early as 1774 when their daughter Susanna was baptised. Adam's name appears on a petition, dated around 1774, of other settlers of Hempfield Township including possible brothers of Adam: Christopher, Peter, and Wendall Ourey. Adam also appears of the tax list for Hempfield Township in 1783 and 1786.3,4 He appeared on the 1790 census for Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. The household consisted of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 8 females.5
Adam Urey moved from Westmoreland County to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, by 1800. In 1800, the area where Adam and his family settled was fell within Allegheny County That are become part of Mercer County which was established in 1800, but was not administratively organized until 1803. Between 1800 and 1803, Mercer County was administered from Meadville, Crawford County. During that time, townships were formed but boundaries continued to shift. In 1800, Adam is found on the tax list for Slippery Rock Township, Allegheny County. In 1801, Adam was listed among the taxables for Cool Spring Township, Mercer County and in 1802 he was listed in Wolf Creek Township, Mercer County. Adam listed in 3 different townships over 3 different years may not have represented a physical move by the Urey family but a function of township formation in those years. Adam lived in Wolf Creek Township the rest of his life.6,2,7,8,9

Catherine Yockey was the daughter of Christian Yockey and Maria Catharina Christ.2,3,4 She married Adam Urey.1

Research Note, 27 January 2013:

While there is no evidence that meets the genealogical standard of proof, the preponderance of circumstantial evidence does suggest that Catherine was the daughter of Christian Yockey (Sr.) According to the Kifer-Beighle family record, Adam Urey was married to Catherine Yockey. The sponsors to the baptism of Adam and Catherine's oldest child Susanna were Christian and Susanna Jacke. In turn, Adam and Catherine were the sponsors to the baptism of the oldest child of Christian and Susanna Jacke. This Christian Jacke or Yockey is certainly the son of Christian Yockey (Sr.) In 1790, both Christian Yockey Sr. and Jr. where living in Washington Township, Westmoreland County in proximity to Adam and Catherine Urey who were living in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. Another son of Christian (Sr.), Abraham lived in Hempfield Township at the same time as Adam and Catherine Urey, according to the baptismal records of Abraham's children. There were no other Yockey/Jacke/Jaggi families known to be living in Westmoreland County at the time when Adam Urey and Catherine Yockey would have been married leaving Christian Yockey Sr. as the only candidate for Catherine's father.3,5,2,6
