According to a notice in the Conneautville Courier, George was struck by a fast passenger train on the Erie road near his home and instantly killed. He was walking on the track and failed to hear the train until it was too late. His body was thrown some distance from the track and escaped mutilation but his right side was crushed, his head was cut and both legs and arms broken. The body was picked up and carried to Meadville on the train.

Conneautville Courier, when the fire was discovered, Livingston ran to a small run to get watter. As he leaned over to fill a pail he fell over dead.
