Father | Marvin Garvin2 d. May 1794 |

Samuel Garvin was born circa 1792 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.1,3,4 He was the son of Marvin Garvin.2 He married Sarah Heck, daughter of Philip Heck and Elizabeth Breiss, on 25 March 1811 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He married Jane Patterson on 26 December 1850.5,6 He died between 1870 and 1871 in Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.7,8
Samuel Garvin was named a benefitiary in the will of his father Marvin Garvin on 7 May 1794. According to the will, Marvin's "body cloathing" was to be divided equally among his three sons. In addition, Samuel was to receive "a Testament and Boston on the Covenant of Grace."9,10
Samuel Garvin was a minor when his father Marvin Garvin died. The court-appointed guardians for Marvin's minor children were Samuel Osburn for his son Archibald; John McConnell of North Huntington Township for his daughter Agnes; John Christy of North Huntington Township for his son Joseph; John Christy for his daughter Jane; and John Probst of North Huntington Township for his son Samuel. John Probst of North Huntington Township was appointed guardian by the court on 9 June 1794 for Samuel who was under 14 years of age. In 1806, Samuel, when he had reached the age of 14, chose Jame B. McGrew to be his guardian.11
Samuel Garvin sold his share of his father Marvin Garvin's Newton property in North Huntington Township, Westmoreland County, to Samuel Johnston in 1812. By the advice of his guardian James B. McGrew, Samuel agreed to take for his share of his father's property 14 acres in full for his part with one acre of land bought from Samuel Johnston.12,13
Samuel Garvin was living in North Huntington Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1820.14 By 1830, Samuel Garvin moved his family to Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. (Claron Township was part of Armstrong County until 1841 when Clarion County was administratively created.) Samuel lived in Clarion County the rest of his life.15,16,17,18,7 He owned 2 acres in Clarion Township, Clarion County. According to the 1887 Clarion County History, Samuel had taken down a small frame-house at Clugh's Mill, moved it and put it up on the little property he had purchased east of the future town of Clarion. The house was one of the first houses built on the site of the future county seat.19,20
Samuel Garvin was a shoemaker, "cleared a few fields for cultivation, and occarsionally burnt a tar-kiln, and boated the product to Pittsburgh."20,17,7,19 He served as county auditor in Clarion County in 1857.21
According to information provided by H. Benton Garvin, Samuel and Jane were married in 1848; however, Jane;s obituary states they were married in 1850. Mr. Garvin's data which may have come from a family record also states that Samuel and Jane were the parents of two children, but only their daughter Malvina is known. According to the 1900 census, Jane was the mother of only one child. Jane's obituary notes "Mrs. Davis is the only surviving child of this union" suggesting there were other children who had predeceased Jane.6,5,17,22,23

Philip Heck1
b. before 1765, d. between 4 February 1826 and 17 March 1826

Philip Heck was born before 1765 likely in Berks County, Pennsylvania.2 He married Elizabeth Breiss on 6 December 1785 in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.3,4,5 He died between 4 February 1826 and 17 March 1826 in North Huntington Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.6
According to a biographical sketch of their son John, Philip and Elizabeth were from Berks County and their marriage record shows they were married in Bern Township, Berks County.5,3 Philip Heck was probably the Philip Heck listed as a single freeman on the tax list for for Bern Township in 1785. He may have appeared on the Bern Township tax lists as early as 1779 when there were two Philip Hecks, one listed as Philip Heck Jr and the other Philip who first appeared on the tax list in 1767. Both Philip Hecks continue to appear on the Bern Township lists until 1789. The elder Philip appears to have moved to Maiden Creek Township, Berks County around 1786 and lived there until his death in 1808. The younger Philip Heck also appears to have lived in Maiden Creek Township until around 1789. The relationship between the two Philip Hecks is unclear. It is unlikely that the elder Philip is the father of the younger Philip who was most likely born before 1765.7
Philip Heck and Elizabeth were living in Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1792 when their daughter Sarah was baptized. Philip appears on the tax list for Allen Township in 1795. He was taxed for 2 horses and 2 cows.4,8,9
Philip's name appears on a subscription list dated 4 April 1797 for a new church house to be built in Shiremanstown, Allen Township. Philip pledged 7 shillings and 6 pence toward the effort. The church was known as the "Peace Church." and the building was in use for over a hundred years as a church and later as a school.8
Philip and Elizabeth were living in North Huntington Township, Westmoreland County, by 1798.10,11,12,13 He purchased 100 acres in North Huntington Township on 13 March 1807 from Jacob Painter and Andrew Christy.14 He purchased 263 acres in North Huntington Township in 1814 with his son John from Adam Horn, Sr. for $2500.15
Philip Heck left a will dated 4 February 1826. The will was entered into probate on 17 March 1826. According to the will, Philip names his wife Elizabeth and children William, Barbara, Christena, Catherine, Molly (married to Jacob Smith), Jacob, and Sarah (married to Samuel Garvin). Daniel Beighly and his son Jacob Heck were named executors. Several of his children were not listed in his will by name including his sons John and Philip, and daughters Margaret and Judith.16
