     Simon P. Rote was born on 4 September 1837 in Green Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Henry Rote and Catherine Wagner.1 He married Rebecca Jane Brown on 12 March 1867 in Green County, Wisconsin.3 He died on 26 February 1917 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois, at age 79.4
     Simon P. Rote came to Stephenson County, Illinois in 1855 and in the fall of 1857, he went to Green County, Wisconsin. Simon was there five years, though part of this time he was in Stephenson County. Most of these years he worked at the carpenter trade. He returned to Stephenson County and bought a farm in the northeast part of Lancaster Township, and gave his attention to farming from the fall of 1867 to the fall of 1872. Simon then engaged in well drilling and setting up pumps until the fall of 1878. Since that time he has been engaged in mercantile pursuits in Freeport. Simon owned 136 acres in Lancaster, Ridott and Rock Run Townships, and had considerable'property in Dakota Township. He was Methodist and a Republican.2,5,6
