As a toddler, Merritt worked as child actor for the burgeoning picture studios in Hollywood. Merritt received a Presidential appointment to West Point, graduating in June of 1941 with a BS in Engineering. Six months into Merritt's military career World War II began. He was given the job of training the many military recruits needed for the war effort. Later in the war he served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Following the war, he served in Berlin, helping to restore Germany's telephone system. In the late '40s, he attended Basic and Pathfinder Airborne Schools. In 1950 he went to Korea as an operations officer with a tank battalion. He was wounded in combat in Korea. Following service in the Korean War, he attended Canadian Army Staff College, and then served three years at the Pentagon. At the height of the Cold War he served three years in Europe, including a stint as Tank Battalion Commander on the border of West and East Germany. From 1957 to 1960 he was an instructor at the Army Staff and Command College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. After serving for twenty-five years in the Army, Merritt retired to Kentfield, California, in 1961, where he worked in the shipping and banking business for another twenty-five years. His love and his dedication to his country and family were the cornerstone of his life.
