ChartsAncestry of David Kipp Melat
Philip Jacob Benninghoff was born on 25 August 1740 in Bischeim, Rheinland-Pfalz.4 He was the son of Johann Valentine Benninghoff and Anna Maria Engelmann.2,3 He married Elizabeth Schwarm, daughter of Wilhelm Schwarm and Anna Margaretha Helfrich, on 8 April 1766 in Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.5 He died in 1826 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.6
Philip Jacob Benninghoff came to America with his parents and siblings aboard the ship Edinbugh, departing Rotterdam and arriving in Philadelphia on 16 September 1751. The Benninghoff family settled in a part of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania that became part of Montgomery County in 1784.7 He moved from Montgomery County to Weisenberg Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, by1775 when he appears on the roles of the Weisenberg Militia roster. Weisenberg Township become part of Lehigh County in 1812.8 He served the Northampton County Militia during the Revolutionary War. On 22 May 1775, Philip appears as a Lieutenant in the Weisenberg Township Volunteer Militia. He shows up again on the regular Militia muster in 1778 as a Major of the 3rd Battalion, Northampton County Militia. In the years 1780 and 1782, he appears as a "drum major" of the 6th Battalion.9 He appears on the tax lists for Weisenberg Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, between 1785 and 1788. He was taxed for 90 acres, 1 horse, and 2 cows.10 He appeared on the census of 1790 in Weisenberg Township, Northampton County, recorded as Philip Pennycoff. The household consisted of 3 males over 16, 6 males under 16, and 3 females.11 He was living in Lynn Township, Northampton County, in 1800 Since Lynn Township is adjacent to Weisenberg Township, Philip appearing in Lynn Township in the census may not represent a physical move but a feature of the ambiguities of the township borders.12
