Andrew Noel was born circa 1754 in Paradise Township, York County.1 He was the son of John Noel and Margaret (?)2 He married Theresa (?) before 1770.1 He died in 1817 in Menallen Township, Adams County.1
Andrew Noel together with his brothers John Noel and Peter Noel sold land in York County to Nicholas Bittinger, an executor of their father's will on 24 February 1779. This land was probably part of their inheritance.3 In 1780 Andrew Noel, then a resident of in Manheim Township, York County, was appointed guardian of the minor children of Christopher Speiss and Henrietta, late widow of Peter Noel, his cousin.3
Prior to in 1790, Andrew Noel and his family moved to the Buchanan Valley in the area of South Mountain in Menallen Township, York County (now Adams County). The Buchanan Valley was originally called Pleasant Valley.3 He was a man of some means and owned considerable land, both in Menallen and neighboring Franklin Township. Land surveys on file at the Adams County Courthouse in Gettysburg show the following for Andrew: 79 acres in Menallen on 20 May 1794; 217 acres in Franklin and Menallen on 29 August 1799; 220 acres in Franklin on 4 May 1793; 424 acres in Franklin on 6 May 1805; 137 acres in Franklin on 10 Mar 1808; 425 acres in Franklin on 3 Dec 1804; 171 acres in Menallen on 30 August 1809.3 In the U.S. Direct Tax for 1798, Andrew Noel was taxed for a 12 x 18 stable, 2 sawmills, a 22 x 92 log barn, a 22 x 40 log barn, a house with 2 acres, a second house with 2 acres occupied by Andrew Jr., a tract of 150 acres, and a tract of 198 acres in Menallen Township.3 He was taxed for similar property in Adams County between 1799 and 1813. A portion of Andrew's property was in Franklin Township.3 He sold land in Franklin Township, Adams County, on 1807 to John Mumma; additional Franklin Township land to George Kimes in 1813; and some of his Menallen and Franklin Township land to his son-in-law, John Lowstetter, in 1813.3 He was taxed for 350 acres, one cow, one horse and one still in Adams County from 1813 to 1817.3
Andrew Noel was a devout religious man of the Roman Catholic faith. He lived in an area populated primarily by persons of German and English descent who were Protestants. The nearest Catholic Church was at Conewago Chapel in eastern Adams County. As this was a day's journey by horse and buggy, Andrew, his family and his neighbors of the Catholic faith celebrated mass at Andrew's home during the periodic visits by Rev. Adolphus L. DeBarth of Conewago. A number of Andrew and Theresa's grandchildren were baptized by the traveling priest "in the South Mountain".3 In 1816, John Lowstetter gave a portion of the land that Andrew sold to him in 1813 to build a Catholic church, which became know as St. Ignatius. The cornerstone was laid on 10 October 1816. A parsonage was begun on 27 December 1818. The church was built of brick and the parsonage was of frame construction. The church was operated by the Jesuits of Conewago until 1858, after which it became independent. The church burned in the 1890's, but was reconstructed shortly thereafter. Andrew was reportedly the first person buried in the St. Ignatius graveyard. There is no marker.4
Andrew Noel left a will on 31 October 1816 in Adams County. The will was proved on 11 March 1817. Accounts were settled on 22 September 1818 and 25 August 1835.5
