Johan Theobald Baum1

b. 15 May 1693, d. 27 August 1762
Johan Theobald Baum was born on 15 May 1693 in Germany.1 He married Anna Margaret (?)2 He died on 27 August 1762 in Alsace Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, at age 69.1 He was buried in Alsace Church cemetery, Alsace Township, Berks County.1
It is not known when Johan Theobald Baum emigrated from Germany. The first mention of Theobald Baum in Pennsylvania is found in a letter dated 27 January 1731 from James Logan to George Boone asking permission from Boone for Theobald to settle on property owned by the Penn family. The letter reads as follows:

ffr’d Geo. Boone

On thy Recommendation of John Brown, Theobald Baum and John Havermaker as honest and inductrious men and fitt to be encouaged in settlen for themselves and families, I have nothing to object to their Sitting down on any small places of vacant land of one or not to exceed two hund. Acres a piece in such places as will not allow large quantities worthy Surveying on old Rights, to be taken and accordingly thou may encourage them.
Keep this to be produced in their behalf when it may be neccessary to show they were so modest as to ask leave, but mention it not to others nor encourage such applications I shall be glad to see thee here at your time thou mentions.

Stenton 27 1st mo. 1731

     Thy frd.

     James Logan.3

He applied for a land warrant or petition for 250 acres in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in 1734. Not doubt the land mentioned in the above letter; the survey was made on 30 April 1734 and shows that the surrounding lands were all vacant with the exception of one plot owned by Jacob Spangler. This land became part of Berks County when it was formed in 1752. Theobald’s name, written as Dewalt Boom, is listed among the First Berks County Taxables from about 1752 in Alsace Township.3,4 He was naturalized on 10 April 1741 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He took the Sacrament or oath on 4 February 1740 and his name was written Theowald Bawm, Philadelphia County.5
The names of Dewald Baum and Jacob Spengler head the list of signatories on a petition responsible for the formation of Alsace Township. The petition was presented to the Philadelphia County Quarter Session Court on 2 December 1744. Those who signed the petition “represented that a sufficient quantity of land had been settled, that the inconvenience under which they labored entitled them to erect a separate township, and that since the first settlers had come from a place called Elsas, in Germany, they desired that the new township should be called by that name. The petition was granted on 3 March 1745.5
The first church in the neighborhood was built in 1737 on land donated by the Spangler and Baum families. Built of logs by the exiled Alsasian Protesttants who settled there, the services were conducted in both French and German. It was a union of Lutheran and Reformed churches and because of the poverty prevailing in the congregation and the scarcity of regular pastors, wandering preachers were employed to conduct the services.5
Johan Theobald Baum left a will recorded on 9 October 1762 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Theobald signed the will on 25 August 1761 by his mark which was probably due to illness or age since in other documents bearing his name the German signature is very plain handwriting. While the original will, in German, is missing, the recorded copy of reads as follows:

In the name of God:
I, Theobald Baum of the township of Alsace, in the County of Berks, Being sick in Body but thanks be to almighty God of sound mind and Memory, having taken to Heart that all Mortals must once dye I do hereby make my last will and Testiment.

6th. I give and bequeath unto my Son Henry the Sum of Seventy Pounds Pennsylvania currency first and foremost above his share which shall be bequeathed to him.

8th. I give and bequeath unto my Son Friedrich the Sum of Ten pounds lawfull money of Pennsylvania first and foremost above the share which I shall bequeath to him hereafter.
9th. It is further my Will that after the above Legacies are paid (or after that) that My Lands shall be sold together with the moveables and that My children hereafter mentioned shall draw share and Share alike, that is to say Peter, Jacob, John, and Jons, Henry and Friedrich, and Judith, who intermarried with Francis Winter, and Catherine.
Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my living Wife Anna Margaret and my Sons Peter and John to be Executors of this my Last Will and Testament thereby revoking and making void all other Wills of my before this Time made and acknowledged this alone to be my Last Will and Testament.
I also give full power and Authority to my said Executors, to give good and Sufficient Deed or Deeds in fee Simple for the premises or Land whereon I now live.
In Witness whereof I have hereto set My Hand and Seal the 25th Day of August Amno dom 1761.
