George Mercklin was born on 27 July 1729 in Berks County, Pennsylvania.4 He was the son of Johann Christian Mercklin and Anna Catherina Bender.2,3 He married Christina Hill, daughter of Johann Jacob Hill and Anna Elizabeth Muller, on 18 December 1750 in Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church, Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.1 He died on 13 February 1779 in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, at age 49.5 He was buried in Moselem Church Cemetery, Richmond Township, Berks County.5
George Mercklin was known as George Merkel.
An unknown person sold 175 acres Richmond Township, Berks County, to George Mercklin for "for the natural love and affection he beareth toward his son" and five pounds current money on 16 November 1751. The land, along the Mussillium (Moselem) Creek in Richmond Township, Berks County, was part of the 350 acres of land Johann Christian obtained through a patent from the Penn brothers.6
In 1767, George built a house on the property given to him by his father. The house was built over a very large spring, with the idea of having plenty of water in the case of an attack by Indians. The water of this spring runs through a trough built along three sides of the basement. The trough is 17 inches wide along the south side of the house, with a 44-inch wide trough along the other two sides having a depth of 9 inches of water. This was used to place crocks of milk to keep the milk from souring, since the tempature of the water remained a steady 55 to 56 degrees at all times. The spring is located at the southeast corner of the house, pouring enough water to fill a 6-inch pipe at all times. The basement was also built with three small port holes, about 8 inches square, where they could shoot at Indians if attacked. There were no windows. The house was sturdily built, using heavy stringers and rafters in the attic which were formed together with wooden pegs. Since the house was built over a spring, the foundation at the east end is constantly eroding requiring regular maintenance.
At the time the house was built, George placed a large rectangular red sandstone over the front door. The stone is still intact and inscribed in German: George Mercklen und Christina. Alle Die in Diesem Haus Gehn Aus Und Ein Los Dir, O. Gott Beholden Sein. Translated as Let all who go in and out of this house, be commended to God. The house still stands.7 George also built a grist mill in about 1749. The mill was built on Moselem Creek, about 400 feet west of the house, above the Merkel Dam. The Creek provided a suitable supply of water to power the mill and later, a saw mill and a cider press.7 He was named executor of the will of his friend Johann Jacob Dreibelbis on 5 February 1761.8 He was appointed guardian of the minor children of Johann Jacob Dreibelbis in 1761 including Jacob Dreibelbis and Martin Dreibelbis, his future sons-in-law. According to Johann Jacob's will, he ordered that his "younger children shall be taught or caused to be taught to read and write by my Executors."9 He purchased 255 acres 12 perches in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, on 12 February 1760 from the George Boone estate for 300 pounds English. This property is now in Richmond Township where the village of Virginville is locates. Seven acres of the property were sold to Jacob Beyer for 72 pounds English.10 He sold 247 acres 102 perches in Richmond Township, Berks County, to Jacob Dreibelbis for 2,000 pounds English money.11 He left a will on 3 October 1778 in Berks County. The will was probated on 24 February 1779.12

Both the Merkel genealogy and the Hill-Merkel family group sheet list as children of George and Christina (Hill) Merkel a daughter named Christina (b. 1764, married to Benjamin Potts) and another named Maria Christina (b. 1766, married to John DeKeim). All of George and Christina's children are baptised at Moselem church, however, there is no record fro Christina (b. 1764). Further the baptismal record of Maria Christina (b. 1766) lists the mother as Catherine, which certainly could have been copied/translated incorrectly. Since George Merkel's will dated 1778 names one daughter named Christina, it is suspect that George and Christina had two surviving daughters named Christina. Further research is required to sort out which Christina is the daughter of George and Christina [DKM, 2006].1,2,3,4
