Jacob Dreibelbis was born on 9 May 1754 in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Johann Jacob Dreibelbis and Barbara Burkhardt.1 He married Maria Magdalena Merkel, daughter of George Mercklin and Anna Maria Christina Hill, in 1777.3 He died on 19 April 1831 in Virginville, Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, at age 76.2 He was buried in St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Molltown, Richmond Township, Berks County.2
Jacob Dreibelbis was named a benefitiary in the will of his father Johann Jacob Dreibelbis dated 5 February 1761. According to the will, Jacob and his brother Martin were each to receive two pieces of land in Richmond Township. Further a house was to be built for both, paid for out of Johann Jacob's estate. The houses were to be 30 feet long and 24 feet wide, and finished "sufficiently for a dwelling house" and a well was to be dug close to each house. Further, the houses were to be finished within 2 or 3 years of Johann Jacob's death. Jacob's house was to be built on the 80 acres tract of land located near the road from Easton to Reading. Martin's house was to be built on the land adjoining George Merkel's land on the Moselem Road.4 He was a minor when his father Johann Jacob Dreibelbis died in 1761. George Mercklin was appointed guardian. According to Johann Jacob's will, he ordered that his "younger children shall be taught or caused to be taught to read and write by my Executors."5
Jacob Dreibelbis bought 247 acres 102 perches in Richmond Township, Berks County, from George Mercklin for 2,000 pounds English money. The land was bounded by Jacob Hummel's land, being part of a tract of 250 acres purchased by George Merkel on 13 February 1760 from the George Boone estate. This land is located where the village of Virginville is now located.6 He also owned 162 acres of unoccupied land in Richmond Township, Berks County. On the farm at Virginville, Jacob built a house in 1787 which stood until 1868. It appears that soon after 1800 he built a stone house in Virginville in which a general store was located for more than a hunder years, until it burned down in 1964.1
Jacob Dreibelbis served during the American Revolutionary War. He was First Lieutenant of the 3rd Company, 2nd Battalion of the Berks County militia. According to the muster list for 17 May 1777, the company commander was Captian Jacob Rothermel and the battalion was commanded by Colonel Joseph Hiester. Jacob was on active duty several times and on 27 September 1777, he was in comand of a company in the field consisting of 2 lieutenants, 3 sergeants, and 29 rank and file. The tour of duty was right after the battle of Brandywine and during the time when the battle of Germantown took place.7
Jacob Dreibelbis and Maria Magdalena Dreibelbis were members of the St. Peter's Reformed Church near Molltown, Richmond Township, Berks County. A few records from around 1800 show that Jacob was one of the most active members and at times served as a deacon, as well as treasurer of the church. He was a member of the building committee when a new church was built in 1809.1

Johann Jacob Dreibelbis was born on 10 April 1709 in Hassloch, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany.1 He was the son of Jacob Dreibelbiss and Anna Margaretha Bruchbacher.2,3 He died on 8 February 1761 in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, at age 51.1 He was buried in Dreibelbis family cemetery, Fleetwood, Berks County, Pennsylvania.1
Johann Jacob Dreibelbis immigrated in 1732 to Pennsylvania from Germany on the ship "Mary" which landed at Philadelphia on 26 Sep 1732. The master of the ship was John Gray. The ship sailed from Rotterdam and stopped at Cowes for clearance papers. Three separate lists of the passengers still exist in the archives at Harrisburg. The first list, the captain's list, totals 191 males sixteen years or older and 122 women and children. Four of the men are listed as having died on the voyage. The age of Johann Jacob is given as 22 years, which evidently is one year off from being correct. The captain, or captain's clerk, wrote the name "Jacob Triolpare". On the other two lists, Johann Jacob wrote his own name. On the so-called "B" list, he wrote "Jacob Dreibelbiss" and on the "C" list he wrote "Johann Jacob Dreibelbis". In both cases he wrote a "D" instead of a "T" as in the records at Hassloch.4,1
What became of Johann Jacob during the first eleven years he was in Pennsylvania is not known; however, he is said to have been sold as an indentured servant to Casper Wister, a Germantown button manufacturer and land speculator. While this is a likely senario for Johann Jacob, this could not have been for eleven years because such indentures were usually limited to three years for adult persons. It is possible that he worked for Wister for wages after the term of his indenture expired.1
The first known written record of Johann Jacob after his arrival in America is found in the 1743 purchase of land in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Beginning at this time, Johann Jacob began to acquire land at a rapid rate, indicating that he had in some way or another acquired sufficient funds to be able to do this. There is tradition that either Casper Wister gave him his first tract of land or that he pruchased his first tract from Wister; however, no proof has been found to verify this.1 He purchased 153 acres and 25 perches in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1743 from from the Penn family estate which totaled 2989 acres. This land apparently was located between Fleetwood and Pricetown, and at that time the whole area was generally known as Oley. In 1758 a portion of Oley was cut off to form Rockland Township and later a portion of Rockland was added to Richmond Township. Eventually all of the Dreibelbis land was in Richmond Township.5 He purchased additional tracts by land warrants: 200 acres on 25 March 1746; 50 acres on 1 March 1750; 50 acres on 11 April 1752; 100 acres on 11 April 1752; 100 acres on 3 Feb 1752; and 30 acres on 12 April 1753. All this totaled 683 acres, and compared with the others in the assessments, he was the second richest man in Richmond Township in 1756, indicating that whatever his occupation was besides farming, he had the ability of acquiring money.1
On 16 June 1750, there appeared an advertisement in the weekly German newspaper "Pennsylvanische Berichte" inserted by a man named Johan Henrich Sickman who appealed for help. Sickman in his advertisement stated that he had been employed for the previous year by Peter Reiff and Jacob Dreibelbis "of Oley" as a schoolteacher. This would indicate that in 1750, Johann Jacob had children old enough to go to school.1
It appears that Johann Jacob was married twice. According to a "Scholl, Sholl, Shull Genealogy," page 97, a Christina Scholl married a Dreibelbis. Since there were no other Dreibelbis in the area at that time, it seems that she must have been married to Johann Jacob. That being the case, Christine, presumably his first wife, died before 1751, as in the year his son Martin was baptized at the Mertz church, a Lutheran church in Dryville, and the mother's name was Barbara Burkhardt. A daughter of Johann Jacob and Barbara, probably Elizabeth, was also baptized at the Mertz church in about 1756. It is not known if Johann Jacob and his wife Christina had any children or if all of Johann Jacob's known children were with Barbara. Uncertainties in the birthdate of his children Abraham, Magdalena, and Catherine and the newspaper advertisement indicating that Johann Jacob had school-age children in 1750 do suggest that Christina may have been the mother of at least some of the Dreibelbis children.1
Johann Jacob Dreibelbis was naturalized on 24 September 1760. He was naturalized by affirmation, rather than by taking an oath. Affirmation is a proceedure typically followed by Mennonites, who were opposed to taking oaths. However, it is believed that Johann Jacob always belonged to the Reformed church.1 He was described as "small, and of a dark complexion, with black eyes and hair, indicating he was of Jewish extraction, according to the 1909 Berks County History. Where this description was obtained is not explained.1
Johann Jacob Dreibelbis left a will dated on 5 February 1761 and probated in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, on 21 February 1761. The Will mentions the names of seven children, but does not mention his wife, indicating that she preceded him in death. George Merkel, a friend, and Abraham Dreibelbis, his oldest son, were named executors. According to the will Abraham was to have a farm of 150 acres, less the 6 acres of meadow land which was to belong to Martin and Jacob, with certain provisions. Martin and Jacob also were each to have a farm when they reached the age of 21 years, and each of the four girls, Elizabeth, Magdalena, Catherine, and Philebena were to have 150 pounds Pensylvania currency when they reached the age of 18 years.6 He died leaving minor children and George Mercklin was appointed guardian of Jacob Dreibelbis and Martin Dreibelbis. According to Johann Jacob's will, he ordered that his "younger children shall be taught or caused to be taught to read and write by my Executors."7
