     William Miles Carner and Lena Marilla Swingle moved from Pennsylvania to Appleton, Minnesota, by 1885. After a brief move to Ohio, the Carner family moved to California in about 1893, settling first in the Bakersfield area where William worked in the oil fields. The family moved to the Los Angeles area by 1900 where William was a butcher and the family operated a grocery store.4,5,6,7 He and Lena Marilla Carner had 6 children, but only 4 were living in 1900.8
