Thomas Dungan immigrated along with his mother and step-father Frances Latham and Jeremy Clarke circa 1638 in New England.5 He was on "Roule of ye ffreeman of ye Colonie of everie Towne." in 1655 in Newport, Rhode Island.6 He was elected freeman at the Court of Election held in 1656 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.7 He purchased 240 acres in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey, circa 1670. He sold his land 21 December 1674, to Mrs. Sarah Reape, whose husband was William Reape of Newport, Rhode Island.8 He and his father-in-lawClement Weaver were a member of a special court to try two Indians, as a juror in Newport, Rhode Island, on 7 June 1671.9 He served sergaent in the militia in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1676.10 He named as one of the Patentees, in the charter of the town of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, on 31 October 1677.11 He was elected one of the two Representatives from East Greenwich, to the Rhode Island Assembly; his brother-in-law Sergeant Clement Weaver was the other incumbant. Arthur Cooke was the Deputy from Newport, and Thomas Dungan's half brother Walter Clarke was then Deputy Governor. In 1681, Thomas was re-elected to the Assembly on 30 April 1678.12 He moved from Rhode Island to Cold Springs, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, by 1682.13 He and a number of neighbors applied for a land warrant in Bucks County surveyed in May 1682. The survey description reads in part "By vertue of a Warrent from ye Govr bearing date the twelfe day of May 1682. Layd out for Thom. The Pennypack Church in Bucks County was an outgrowth of this Church. Like others in the ministry, he was not successful in accumulating wealth, as apppears from the following statement under date of October 21, 1692
'Arthur Cook in the behalf of the widow Dungan and children, who hold about 600 acres of land amounst them at a penny rent per acre, requests that we would sell the same that it might be at equal rent with the purchasers, the people being very poor, and the land very barren, and they Ready to leave the province, not being able to pay the rent, and the said Arthur Cook in kindness to them and to keep them in the province, intends to lend them the money. The which was granted at five poinds p'r c't and to pay all the rent in arrears.17' He served on the first Grand Jury in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1684.13 The will of Thomas Dungan, of Coldspring, County of Bucks, dated 3 December 1686, proved 24 November 1687, and recorded 1 February 1688, mentions his wife to whom he left all household goods, as Linnen, wooling, Bedding, brass, pewter; 'only my son Clement his bed, my daughter Maries' Bed and two brass Kettles excepted.'
To my wife, my house and considering her natural life for the bringing up of my children, and after her death, to my three sons: Thomas, Jeremiah, and John, to be divided by honest men chosen by them; or if my wife wishes to sell the house and lands, she to have one-third and other two-thirds to my sons: Thomas, Jeremiah and John; they paying each to their sisters, Mary, Rebecka and Sarah Dungan 5 pounds each. To sons William and Clement, and daughter Elizabeth West, each five shillings. Wife to be sole executrix. Signed with his mark. Witnesses: Arthur Cooke, John Cooke, Will Dungan
Administration was granted to Elizabeth Dungan, widow, 13 November 1687. Inventory made by Edmond Loet and Abraham Cox on 4 December 1687. Total 67 pounds; 1; 0.18 Thomas Dungan's 200 acres in Bucks County was sold by his sons Clement, John, Thomas, and Jeremiah on 2 April 1698. The deed states that the land was part of a tract of 400 acres which William Penn granted to Thomas Dungan, Sr., and his son Clement.19
