     Nathaniel West was an original member of the First Baptist Church in Newport, Rhode Island which was organized about 1644.2 He "drowned in February 1658/59 during a visit to the Plymouth Colony, and, at the inquest on his death, the jury rendered the verdict on 1 March 1658/59 that, 'Nathaniel West, a stranger to us, belonging to Road Island, being by God's providence amongst us, and being under cure of an infirmitie of his body, it appears that he had occasion to go to Providence, and going upon the ice, it broke, and he fell in and was drowned; when his body was taken up, it appeared to us that his death was in no way violent nor wilfull, but accidental as far as we apprehend.1'"

     Matthew West was born circa 1598 in England.1 He died circa 1677 in Newport County, Rhode Island.1
     Matthew West immigrated by 1636 to Lynn, Massachusetts, from England.1 He was admitted as a freeman on 9 March 1637 in Lynn.1 He moved from Lynn to Newport County, Rhode Island, circa 1646.1 He was admitted as a freeman in 1655 in Newport County, Rhode Island.2 He was one of the members from Providence at the Court of Commissioners, which met at Portsmouth on 28 June 1655.2 He wrote a will on 16 January 1676 in Newport County, Rhode Island. According to the will, he conveyed to his grandson NathanielWest the dwelling-house in which he then lived bounded partly by lands of John Crandall and John Thornton. Nathaniel was described as "the son of my eldest son Nathaniel West, who departed this life many years ago," and the property was bequeathed to him in consideration of the fact that "he hath for many years past and now does live with me, and is the comfort of me in my old age."2

     After the death of her father, Mary's mother remarried William Hanna and moved out of Lawrence County. Mary remained in New Castle-Shenango Township area living with her mother's family. In 1860, young Mary was living with her grandmother Kate Long. After her mother's death, Mary lived with her uncle Graham Long and aunt Sarah (Long) Loyd until her marriage in 1872. During this time Mary was referred to as Mary Hanna or Mary Long; however, her obituary states that she was the daughter of John Loyd and Elizabeth Long.3,4 Mary Virgilla Biddle and John Wesley Biddle lived in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.5,6,7,8 She and John Wesley Biddle were members of the Central Christian Church.1
