     Jeremy Clarke was baptized on 1 December 1605 in Kent, England.2 He married Frances Latham, daughter of Lewis Latham and Elizabeth (?), circa 1637 in England.1 He died in November 1651 in Newport, Rhode Island, at age 45.1
     Jeremy Clarke and Frances Latham along with Frances' children and probably Frances' widowed sister Ellen immigrated circa 1638 to New England. Jeremy was one of the founding members of Newport (now in Rhode Island) and became "President Regent" or Governor of the colony. At the first meeting of the settlers on 16 March 1638/39, "It is agreed and ordered, that the Plantation now begun at the southwest end of the Island, shall be called Newport."1 He and William Freeborn were elected freemen on 16 March 1641 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.3 He and William Freeborn served as members of a Grand Jury in Portsmouth on 1 December 1641.4 He served many postions in the new colony to include treasurer and constable and in 1644 was elected Captain of the Militia, then the highest rank attainable. In 1648, he was elected Governor.1

     James Barker was a Corporal of Militia in 1644 under the command of Captain Jeremy Clarke, his wife's step-father, and was later promoted to Ensign. He served as a member of the House of Deputies and was re-elected 14 times from 1661 until 1686. He was one of the Patentees named in the royal charter of the Company in 1663. He was a member of the Governor's Council, 1664, '65, '66, 1670, '71, '72, '77 and '78. James was Deputy Governor of Rhode Island in 1678, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport.1
