Jack Duane Daum was born on 3 September 1923 in Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of William H. Daum and Mary Jane Canada.1 He died on 13 July 2007 in Payson, Arizona, at age 83.2
Mr. Daum excelled in writing, acting and politics at Oil City High School. After graduating from high school in 1941, he entered the Army Air Corps where he served until 1945. He later attended the University of Washington and the University of Alaska.
Mr. Daum was known best for his work as a newspaperman, political strategist and speech writer. He worked for newspapers in Alaska, Washington, D.C., California and New Mexico during a career that spanned more than 40 years and included two Pulitzer Prize nominations. He wrote for the Santa Fe Reporter in New Mexico in the 1960s and for a short time published his own paper, The Challenger.
As a political strategist he managed successful campaigns for candidates in the Territorial Legislature of Alaska, as well as for New Mexico's governor David Cargo. He worked in Washington, D.C., for 16 years where he served as an aide, speech writer and campaign manager for Rep. Manuel Lujan Jr. He wrote speeches for numerous politicians including Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan.
Mr. Daum retired to Tesuque, New Mexico in 1985, where his family had lived since 1964.
He was an avid fisherman, poet and storyteller. He was a generous person with a sense of humor and adventure that was appreciated by all who knew him, and his thirst for knowledge was with him until the end.2
