Thomas Weaver1
b. say 1560
Thomas Weaver Concerning the ancestry of Clement Weaver, Mr. J. Gardner Bartlett was commissioned by Lucius E. Weaver to travel to England and research the life and ancestry of Clement Weaver. His findings were published as part of Lucius E. Weaver's work entitled, History and Genealogy of a Branch of the Weaver Family, published in 1928 by the Du Bois Press, Rochester, New York. Lucius Weaver had the following to say concerning the efforts of Mr. J. Gardner Bartlett: When this work was begun nothing was known regarding the ancestry of our immigrant ancestor, Clement Weaver, further than that he was a Welshman.
Mr. J. Gardner Bartlett of Boston, who is a specialist in English research, was then commissioned to go overseas and glean such facts as could be found concerning our ancestor who came to America about 1632. He found that Clement was a son of Thomas Weaver who lived in Glastonbury, Eng., as early as 1590 and as late as 1632.The details of his exhaustive research are recorded in Chapter IV. He made no attempt to trace the family further back than Glastonbury. When the early home of our immigrant ancestor was found to be in Glastonbury, Eng., the discovery was reported to H. Baillie Weaver, a retired barrister of London, Eng. He is very familiar with the Weaver pedigree and has gone into it more deeply than any other person. His reply is as follows:
Widdington,
Newport, Essex,

Lucius E. Weaver, Esq.,

Rochester, New York.
Dear Sir:
Many thanks for your letter of the 4th inst. I am glad you have at last located Clement Weaver and I am obliged to you for the details you send me. The fact that the branch of the Weavers in question belongs to the substantial yeoman class in no way diminishes the probability, nay the certainty, that if inquiries are pursued further you will find that such branch links itself on to one or other of the two Weaver stems -- Cheshire or Herefordshire.
As far as I know all English Weavers descend from one or other of those stems.
Yours very faithfully,
H. BAILLE WEAVER
In another letter he stated that many families of the early generations of the Weavers of Cheshire settled in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Wales.
A few years ago, William John Weaver, who is No. 487 in Chapter VII., became interested in his ancestry and spent some time in English research with excellent results. He found that our immigrant ancestor, Clement Weaver, was a son of John or Thomas, who were sons of No. 9 in the following pedigree, but he was unable to determine which was the father of Clement.
He knew nothing about the work of J. Gardner Bartlett, and he did not know that the pedigree which follows had a Welsh ancestry. He compiled a brief genealogy containing the results of his research and his own immediate line. He was about to publish it when he learned that this work was in progress and he turned over his copy to the author of this volume. One of the pages of his manuscript reads as follows:
"Visitation of London. Taken from Robert Cooke, Clarencent King of Arms in the year 1568. Published in London, 1869, by the Harleian Society."
1. "WALTER WEAVER of Co. Hereford, Esq."
2. "WALTER WEAVER, sone and heyer, married Joane Bohun, daughter and heyer of Gilbert Bohun and Marguerite (Wastney) Bohun of Sallup (Shropshire). "Walter, 1st son; Thomas, 2nd son."
3. "THOMAS WEAVER married Marguerite Wysham, daughter of Sir William Wysham."
4. "WALTER WEAVER married Maud, daughter of John Burghill, Esq."
5. "THOMAS WEAVER married Anne, daughter of (???) Delabere.
6. "JOHN WEAVER married Jane, daughter of James Apleby. Jenkin, 1st sonne; Griff, 2nd sonne; Walter, 3rd sonne; Henry, 4th sonne."
7. "JENKIN WEAVER married Marguerite, daughter of Robert Nanton. John, 1st sonne; Griffith, 2nd sonne; Hugh, 3rd sonne; Ellen, daughter."
8. "GRIFFITH WEAVER married Ellen, daughter of John Sadler of Prestend in County Hereford (Prebendus in Co. Hd. de Prestine. Harl. 1442)."
9. "JOHN WEAVER, Gentleman, married Alice, daughter of Thomas Anton, Clark of the Courts of Wards and Liveries. John, 1st sonne and hiere; Thomas, 2nd sonne; George, 3rd sonne; James, 4th sonne; Jane, Anne, Catherine."
"Clement Weaver, who emigrated to America 1630-1632, was one of the younger sons of John or Thomas, who were sons of No. 9 on the above pedigree, but so far the writer has been unable to learn definitely which, as the records are not complete."
William John Weaver was a careful and conscientious investigator and we might accept his report without question, but there is evidence to support it. The report of Mr. Bartlett (see Chapter IV.) proves that the father of Clement was Thomas Weaver, which confirms the finding of William John Weaver to that extent.2
Mr. J. Gardner Bartlett of Boston, who is a specialist in English research, was then commissioned to go overseas and glean such facts as could be found concerning our ancestor who came to America about 1632.

Isaac Edgington was born circa 1752 in Hampshire County, Virginia.1 He was the son of George Edgington and Margaret Broome.2,3 He married Elizabeth (?) say 1777.1 He died circa 1836 in Sprigg Township, Adams County, Ohio.1
Isaac Edgington appears on the tax lists for Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1781. He is taxed for 80 acres, 2 horses, 3 cattle, 7 sheep.4 He served along with his brothers John George, Joseph, and Jesse served in Captain James Munn's Company of the Washington County Militia during the closing years of the American Revolution. Captain Munn's Company participated in Colonel William Crawford's disastrous Sandusky expedition in May and June 1782; however, it is not clear if Isaac participated in that event as his name first appears on the muster rolls in June. Perhaps Isaac joined the militia in response to the outrage of Crawford's defeat at Sandsusky.5 He and Elizabeth (?) received a land grant 107 acres in Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on 17 March 1787. He sold the land to his brother Jesse on 23 April 1796 for 133 shillings, six pence. It is likely that Isaac never took up residence on the land as he, his father and his brother moved to Ohio County, Virginia, according to the tax records.6,7
Isaac Edgington moved from Ohio County, Virginia to Adams County, Ohio, circa 1796. His son Jacob Edgington says in his 1863 statement to Mr. Draper, that his father removed to Adams County, in 1794. Isaac settled outside the stockade at Manchester in Sprigg Township along Isaac's Creek, which bears his name. While Isaac and his brother George and Joseph were among the first settlers of the Bentonville area of Sprigg Township, they likely did not settle permanently in Adams County until 1796.6,8 He was apointed a supervisor of roads in Manchester Township, Adams County, Ohio, on 12 September 1797.9 He was appointed along with Daniel Robbins and John McGate to be supervisors of Manchester Township on 13 March 1798.9 He served on a jury in Adams County, Ohio, in October 1809.9 Hewas taxed for 300 and 100 acre tracts in Sprigg Township, Adams County, Ohio, in 1809.10 He was listed in pollbook of an election held in Sprigg Township, Adams County, Ohio, on 9 October 1810.11 He and Elizabeth (?) appeared on the census of 1830 in Sprigg Township, Adams County, Ohio.12

George Edgington1
b. say 1700, d. 1791

George Edgington was born say 1700 in England or Wales.1 He married Margaret Broome on 30 July 1743 in First Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.2 He died in 1791 in Holliday Cove, Ohio County, Virginia.1
Family traditions concerning George Edgington birthplace and his immigration to America have several common threads. Traditions are conflicted over whether George was from Wales or England, however, it is commonly stated that he did emmigrate from London. Concerning the circumstances of his departure from the British Isles, the various traditions seem to consistantly indicate that he came as a stowaway. His motivation for leaving or running away appears to revolve around punishment or severe whipping that George endured or anticipated for something he did, possibly at school. As far as his age when he left for America, the stories range from stowing away as a boy, such as age 15 in 1722, to about 1740. All of the traditions suggest that he ended up in Philadelphia.3
Family tradition also suggests that soon after his marriage, George settled in Hampshire County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia) "below the mouth of the South Branch of the Potomac River, six miles from Edwards Fort, and thirty miles from Winchester." While it is entirely possible that George settled early in the wilderness of Virginia's South Branch River Valley, the first verifiable record of George living in this area is a deed for land he purchased dated 1772.3
Another family tradition that has been passed down recounts the story of George Edgington being captured and held by Indians for three years. While the date of the attack and the captivity is not specified, documented accounts of similar Indian attack were common during the mid 1700s in the frontier regions of Virginia and Pennsylvania. According to the story, Edgington went to a tub or grist mill belonging to Joseph Edwad, and there were about a dozen Dutch boys and girls also there at the mill. All had to stay overnight. The next morning, all were taken by the Indians, tomahawked or kidnapped. The Indians tomahawked the children, except two boys and Edgington, in the mill and set it on fire and started for Fort Duquense. After going 3 miles, they killed the two remaining Dutch boys. In crossing a stream, an Indian walked over a log, leaving Edgington, who waded; and when in the middle of the stream, he pulled in the Indian, who, when reaching the shore, aimed a tomahawk blow, which Edgington partly dodged, splitting his nose and upper lip. The other Indians interfered and saved a repitition of the blow, tied up the wound, and took him first to Fort Duquesne, and then up the Scioto (located in present-day Ohio) and kept him for 3 years. Two days after he was taken, his wife barely escaped, being with a couple of families of 8 persons, under protection of the soldiers going to Edwards Fort. All were waylaid and killed. While Edgington was absent, his wife, two years after, not doubting he was killed at the mill, married again; but when he returned, he kindly gave her the choice of husbands, and she chose her first.3
George Edgington purchased 200 acres in Hampshire County, Virginia, on 10 August 1772 from William Cunningham.4 He sold the 200 acres purchased from Cunningham in Hampshire County, Virginia, on 2 October 1774 to Levi Ashbrooke.4 He received a land grant from Lord Fairfax for 226 acres near Dillon's Run, a branch of Great Cacayelion in Hampshire County, Virginia, on 23 October 1777. The property was described by a survey made by Elias Poston, beginning at a Chestnut oak, the said Edgington's corner, thence to James Brady's corner, George Nixon's corner, crossing a frain of Dillon's Run to Michael Laubinger's line, to John Engle's corner, to Edgington's corner, then to the beginning, with all rights, members and appurtenances, Royal Mines excepted, and a full third of all lead, copper, tin, coals, iron mine & iron ore that shall be found thereon.4 He received a land grant for 152 acres on both sides of the top of Riserman's Mountain in Hampshire County, Virginia, on 25 August 1779. The land was surveyed on 11 November 1762, beginning at 2 white oaks & spanish oak on the SE side of the mountain by the path that leads from Edgington's to Ashbrook's in his former line, crossing the mountain twice before returning to the beginning point.4
George Edgington moved along with several of his sons to Washington County, Pennsylvania, early 1780s.5 He appears on the tax lists for Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1781. He is taxed for 1 horse, 2 cattle, 2 sheep, but no land.5 He appears on the tax lists for Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1783. George's sons Jesse, John, Isaac, and George Jr. also appear on the tax lists for Nottingham Township in 1783.6
George Edgington returned to Virginia by 1787 with his sons, settling in Ohio County, Virginia.7 He gave power of attorney to [Receiver] in 1788 in Ohio County, Virginia.8
