Arthur Graham Long was born on 6 December 1789 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.2 He was the son of Alexander Long and Sarah Graham.2 He married Catherine Thompson, daughter of Adam Thompson and Elizabeth (?), on 24 March 1816 in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.1,3 He died on 19 March 1858 in Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, at age 68.1,4
Arthur Graham Long moved with his father in 1806 to the area that is now south New Castle in Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Arthur's father purchased a 200 acres farm which was divided between Arthur and his brother Joseph. It appears from the census records that Arthur's father lived with him until his death in 1841. The property became very lucrative for the Long family as parcels of the farm were developed as part of the expanding city of New Castle.5,6,7,8,9,10 He was a farmer and owned a "mercantile house" in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in 1813.11,12

According to his obituary, while Grimes was in the west, he married and had a son and two daughters. He left this family and when he returned later he found his wife remarried. He deeded her the farm in the west and returned to New Castle.4
According to his obituary, his life had been one full of eccentricities. He vowed when Lincoln was elected that he would not cut his hair until another Democratic president was elected. When Grover Cleveland was elected president, his attorny Robert W. McCandless stopped him on the street and said "Bub, we're in power. Now you can cut your hair Grimes." Grimes looked doubtful and then walked away with a sad expression in his eyes, and he never cut his hair.4
