Dutton Lane and Corbin Lane appear on the tax lists for Bedford County, Pennsylvania, between 1774 and 1779.5 He and Corbin Lane moved from Bedford County to Washington County, Tennessee, circa 1781.6 He was taxed for 4 horses, 2 cattle, and no land or cash in Washington County in 1781.6 He sold 100 acres on Lick Creek (formerly Washington County) in Greene County, Tennessee, on 20 December 1782 to John Hornbeck for 50 pounds.7 He sold 100 acres on Lick Creek Aruntons Mill Shale Creek (formerly Washington County) in Greene County, Tennessee, on 20 December 1782 to John Liget for 50 pounds.8 He appears on the tax lists for Greene County, Tennessee, in 1783. Greene County was formed from Washington County in that year. An Isaac Lane is also listed.9 He was taxed for 150 acres in Greene County, Tennessee, in 1798.10 He appears on the tax lists for Scott County, Virginia, in 1815. He was in the Hiram Kilgore District and was taxed for 5 horses and 7 cattle. He was living near William and Benjamin Lane. His brother Corbin Lane was also on the tax roles for Scott County.11 He sold 100 acres on the first branch of Cedar Creek in Greene County, Tennessee, on 4 January 1816 to William Ford for $300. The land was grant number 1259, dated 12 July 1794 by the state of North Carolina to Dutton Lane.12 He appeared on the census of 1820 in Scott County, Virginia.13 He sold 50 acres on Lick Creek in Greene County, Tennessee, on 19 June 1823 to Hugh Carter for $200. This land is part of a 150 acres tract William Ford sold to Dutton Lane.14 He, and Keziah (?) sold land in Scott County, Virginia, to Benjamin H. Lane in 1828.15 He
There is a lot of confusion between this Dutton Lane and Dutton Lane, son of Rev. Tidence Lane (1724-1806). TIdence Lane's son Dutton was born about 1761, probably in North Carolina. He is probably the same Dutton Lane who died in 1839 in Macon, McDonough County, Illinois. Being first cousins, once removed, it is likely that the two DUtton Lanes were aware of each other, and it is certainly possible that they did cross paths from time to time. Since Tidence Lane was a Baptish preacher he and his family moved throughout the western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee frontier. Our Dutton Lane lived in southwestern Virginia and far eastern Tennesse--the central portions of the territory covered by Reverand Lane. TIdence and much of his family settled in Jefferson County, Tennessee which is west of Greene County and Scott County. Tidence's son Dutton lived in that area, specifically in Hamblin County, for at least a time before moving to Illinois. There is no specific evidence that the two Dutton Lanes both lived in the same areas.
