William Logan1

b. before 1765, d. circa 1824
ChartsAncestry of Cherie Lee Phillips
William Logan was born before 1765 in Virginia.1 He married Mary Blakely, daughter of James Blakely and Rebecca (?).2 He died circa 1824 in Knox County, Kentucky.1
William Logan and Mary Blakely were both most likely born in Virginia, but their whereabouts before the family settled in Knox County, Kentucky around 1800 is not known for sure. From the post-1850 census data, their children claim to have been born in Tennessee or North Carolina. A review of migration history shows that in the 1780s there was a movement of Virginians into what is now eastern Tennessee via the rivers that flowed between the two regions. At the time however, the area now within Tennessee was claimed by North Carolina which could account for the claims by William and Mary's children to have been born in Tennessee and North Carolina, when in fact they were most likely born in what is now Tennessee. So it seems entirely reasonable that William and Mary moved their family west from Virginia in search of new opportunites and found themselves in what is now eastern Tennessee. From there it would have been another very natural migration via rivers to southeastern Kentucky and the newly formed Knox County.
There are a few references to a William Logan to be found in eastern Tennessee in the last decade of the 18th century, but given the commonality of his name it cannot be determined in these references are to our William Logan. A William Loggins also spelled Loggan appears in the court and land records of Davidson County, Tennessee. William Loggins was granted 640 acres of land from the state of North Carolina in 1786. William then sold land in Davidson County in 1797. Further, in 1794, in Davidson County, William Loggans "bought one negro man named Amosto." William Logan of Knox Co. KY had one slave on the 1801 tax list. A William Logan is also found in the records of Greene County, Tennessee. On 26 December 1791, land grant of 600 acres on the north side of the Nolichucky River in Greene County was granted to Robert Boyd and William Logan. Finally, the marriage record of a James Logan, possibly the son of William, to a Lydia Reese is found in the Greene County marriage records in 1799. It cannot be determined if the Davidson County William Logan and the Greene County William Logan are different men or one and the same. In any case, while it has not yet been proven, it is possible that our William is at least one of these two men.3,4,5,6,7
He purchased 200 acres on the Green River on the Cumberland River in Lincoln County, Kentucky, on 19 April 1799 from William Henderson for |This area of Lincoln County became part of Knox County in 1799.8 He was admitted as a lawyer in Knox County, Kentucky, in 1803.9 He appears on the tax lists for Knox County, Kentucky, between 1801 and 1824. In 1801, William was taxed for 1 slave. William's wife Mary appears on the 1825 tax list indicating that he had died during the previous year.10 He appeared on the census of 1810 and 1820 in Knox County, Kentucky.11,12

Mary Blakely was born between 1760 and 1770 in Virginia.3 She was the daughter of James Blakely and Rebecca (?)2 She married William Logan.4 She was still living in 1830 when she was ennumerated as head of a household in the 1830 census of Knox County, Kentucky.3
Mary Blakely also went by the name of Polly Blakely.3 She and William Logan were both most likely born in Virginia, but their whereabouts before the family settled in Knox County, Kentucky around 1800 is not known for sure.
