     James Peter Hughes was born on 1 January 1823 in Campbell County, Virginia.1,2 He was the son of James Hughes and Hannah (?)3,4 He married Mary Ann Stethem, daughter of William Stethem and Catherine Kerr, on 31 October 1847 in Highland County, Ohio. They were married by Peter Hatcher, Justice of the Peace.5 He married Jane Davidson, daughter of William Davidson and Ella (?), on 5 October 1863 in Highland County, Ohio. They were married by Michael O'Donaghue.6 He died on 8 April 1895 in Marshall Township, Highland County, Ohio, at age 72.1,2 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio.7
     James Peter Hughes was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census of Marshall Township, Highland County, Ohio. The household consisted of James P., his wife Mary Ann, and daughter Hannah. They were living next to James' parents.8 He was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census of Marshall Township, Highland County, Ohio. The household consisted of James, his wife Mary Ann, and their chiildren Hannah, Catherine, Anna, Maria, Sarah, and Bridget. James' father James Hughes was also living with them along with three farm hands.9 He was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census of Marshall Township, Highland County, Ohio. The household consisted of James, his second wife Jane, and his children Catherine, Anna, Maria, Sarah J., Bridget, James, William, Peter, and Robert.10 He was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census of Marshall Township, Highland County, Ohio. The household consisted of James, his wife Jane, and his children Kate, Anna, Maria, Sarah, Bridget, James, William, Peter, Robert, Mary, Tessa, Joseph, and Lucy. His mother-in-law Ella Davidson was also living in his household.11 He and Jane Hughes had nine children.12 He was a very accomplished farmer in Highland County. He probably acquired his father's farm east of the village of Marshall. The value of James P.'s real estate greatly increased over the years. In 1850 it was assessed at $2000; 1860, $8550; and 1870, $13740. At least part of his farm, 185 acres, was acquired by James P.' son James J. in 1895.12,13,14,15 According to a biographical sketch of his son James J., James P. was "not only the father of a number of the best people of the county, but he was an active and leading man in his day, a staunch Democrat, and several times trustee of his township."12
