Joseph Northrup was born circa 1623 in Yorkshire, England.² He married Mary Norton, daughter of Francis Norton Jr. and Mary Houghton, (an unknown value.)^3,4 He died on 11 September 1669 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.³ He was buried in Milford Cemetery, Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.⁵ Joseph's headstone is unreadable. A later (1912) marker at Milford Cemetery lists Joseph, wife Mary, son William, and others.⁵

Joseph Northrup emigrated in 1637 from England. He was one of the 'Eaton and Davenport's Company, of good character and fortune,' who came aboard the ships Hector and Martin, landing in Boston on 26 July 1637.³ Hesettled in April 1638 in New Haven, Connecticut.³ He moved on 30 November 1639 to Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut; not being in the Church following, his name appears immediately after the free planters.³ He became a member of the First Church 9 January 1641/42.³ He left a will on 1 September 1669. He Will mentions children: Joseph, Samuel, Jeremiah, and John. Also mentioned is "my mother" possibly referring to his wife's mother.³
