     Harry Baxter Benninghoff was born on 8 April 1874 near Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Lewis Nelson Benninghoff and Mary Matilda McClintock.2,1 He married Trottie M. Merrell in March 1901.1 He died in April 1949 in Franklin, Indiana.1 He and Trottie M. Merrell were buried in Franklin, Indiana.1
     Harry Baxter Benninghoff the only one of his family to seek higher education. In about 1890, at the age of 16, he moved to Valparaiso, Indiana where he worked and studied. After a short time there, he moved to Franklin, Indiana, a few miles south of Indianapolis to attend Franklin College. It took him almost ten years to get his degree, as he had to spend several years teaching school in several locations and to "ride circuit" as a Baptist preacher. After he married Edith Merrell in 1901, they went immediately to Burma as missionaries. They returned to the United States in 1904 where they set up housekeeping in Valaraiso, while Harry served as pastor of the First Baptist Church while earning his Masters at the University of Chicago. In September 1907, the family moved to Japan, where Harry remained until early 1941.1
