     Harry Baxter Benninghoff the only one of his family to seek higher education. In about 1890, at the age of 16, he moved to Valparaiso, Indiana where he worked and studied. After a short time there, he moved to Franklin, Indiana, a few miles south of Indianapolis to attend Franklin College. It took him almost ten years to get his degree, as he had to spend several years teaching school in several locations and to "ride circuit" as a Baptist preacher. After he married Edith Merrell in 1901, they went immediately to Burma as missionaries. They returned to the United States in 1904 where they set up housekeeping in Valaraiso, while Harry served as pastor of the First Baptist Church while earning his Masters at the University of Chicago. In September 1907, the family moved to Japan, where Harry remained until early 1941.¹

     Trottie M. Merrell married Harry Baxter Benninghoff, son of Lewis Nelson Benninghoff and Mary Matilda McClintock, in March 1901.¹ She and Harry Baxter Benninghoff were buried in Franklin, Indiana.¹

     Margaret Lois Benninghoff was born on 3 December 1901 in Rangoon, Burma.¹ She was the daughter of Harry Baxter Benninghoff and Trottie M. Merrell.¹

     Margaret Lois Benninghoff was educated at Oberlin, Ohio and Rochester, New York in 1923.¹ She a widow of a Rear Admiral living in 1979 in Virginia.¹
