Further, if Samuel's brother Daniel was unable to provide his portion of the support for their mother, Samuel was required to provide that support. Jacob also willed that his "sons shall find and chop; ready for the stove; a sufficient quantity of fire wood for" their mother Elizabeth. Finally Samuel was to pay her four hundred dollars to his sister Sarah. She was also to be paid seven hundred and five dollars by both Samuel and Daniel.17,2

Samuel Long1

b. 22 February 1792, d. 7 September 1862
ChartsAncestry of David Kipp Melat
Samuel Long was born on 22 February 1792 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1 He married Eva Hershberger, daughter of Johannes Hershberger and Christina Elizabeth Fehler, on 17 December 1822.1 He died on 7 September 1862 in Copley Township, Summit County, Ohio, at age 70.2 He was buried in Copley Cemetery, Copley, Summit County, Ohio.3
Samuel Long served as a private in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. He served from 29 July 1813 to 13 August 1813.4
Samuel Long appears for the first time on the assessment (tax) lists for in Miles Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1817. He is listed as a single freeman indicating that he was unmarried and owned no land. He is listed again in 1818 as a single freeman.5 He was taxed for 50 acres in Miles Township in 1819. Samuel continues to appear on the Miles Township assessment lists for several years. There are several other Longs listed on the Miles Township lists along with Samuel although it has not been determined what, if any, relationship exists among them. However, on the 1821 list, Samuel is taxed for 100 acres and a notation for a William Long shows that 50 acres formerly assessed to William has been transferred to Samuel. This transfer of land does suggest a possible relationship between William and Samuel.6
Samuel Long was living in Logan Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1830 where he was taxed for 174 acres of land. Logan Township would later become part of Clinton County.7
Samuel Long and his family moved in 1837 to Venango County, Pennsylvania. He purchased 200 acres in Oakland Township, Venango County, in 1837 from Mr. T. Cadwalader for $450.8 He was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census of Plum Township, Venango County. The household consisted of 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 40-50.9
Samuel Long and Eva Long moved circa 1857 to Copley Township, Summit County, Ohio. They lived there the rest of their lives.10
