Wilhelm Schmidt1,2

b. 21 January 1799, d. 30 January 1862
Wilhelm Schmidt was born on 21 January 1799 in Germany.2,1 He married Gertrude Eisenman, daughter of Joseph Eisenman and Theresa Weissenhorn.1,3 He married Elisabetha (?)4,5 He married Barbara (?)2,6 He died on 30 January 1862 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, at age 63.2 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Allegheny County.2
William came from "Germany on the same vessel with the Eisenmann family.... Mr. Schmidt located in Shippensville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, purchasing sixty acres of virginal land on which he erected a log house, building it in so sustantial a manner that it is standing today [1909].... William Schmidt soon found that the primitive life and salubrious atmosphere of these wooded regions were profitable to him in only one way, and that was in the possession of a large, healthy, and rapidly increasing family for whose care and upbringing he saw no prospects. He therefore moved to the growing city of Pittsburgh in 1836, where by his industry and thrift he soon established the business now conducted under the name of G. W. Schmidt Company."1
William established a wine and liquor import business in Pittsburgh in 1836. He ran the highly successful business until 1854 when he turned the reigns of the business over to his son Joseph. Following Joseph's death in 1863, the company was probably run by trustees until William's son George came of age and assumed control of the company in 1865. Jordan's biographical sketch of the Eisenman family which goes into some detail on William Schmidt does mention his success as a businessman, but it does not mention the nature of that business. The 1860 census enumeration of his family does show that William had accumulated considerable wealth recording his real estate worth $20,000 and his personal estate at $5,000. However, his occupation was not recorded. Jordan does mention that William's business was taken over by his son George W. Schmidt. The 1870 census enumeration for George reveals that nature of the business by recording his occupation as wholesale liquor dealer, with real estate valued at $25,000 and personal estate worth $35,000, very considerable for that time.1,7,5,6,8
