Chapin Henry Stroup and his family were living in Franklin in 1900.1 He was working, along with his brother Nelson, as a stillman in an oil refinery in Marietta, Ohio, in 1910.5
"At the turn of the century, Chapen was working in an oil refinery near
Franklin, PA. Somehow he came into some money and together with several
other would-be wildcatters went to the Yucatan area of Mexico where they drilled five wells and struck oil on one or more. However, the wells did
not produce enough to warrant building a railroad into the area to get the oil out. They also had trouble with bandits. He arrived back at the Texas
border, probably in 1905, dead broke. Meanwhile Annie and her three children remained in Pennsylvania surviving as best they could. Once in Texas, Chapen hired on as cattle drover and was able to work his way to Texas City where he went back to what he knew best: oil refining. In 1906 he was able to bring his family to Texas City, which is where my father was raised. (The moral
of this story is that for every wildcatter that made a fortune, there were a hundred that went broke trying.)" (As told to Richard Stroup by his father Park Willard Stroup.)4
