John Long was born circa 1800 in Kentucky.1 He married Lucy P. Hayes on 1 May 1825 in Madison County, Illinois.2 He died on 24 January 1872 in Troy, Doniphan County, Kansas.1
John Long appeared on the Kansas State census of 1865 in Wolf River Township, Doniphan County, Kansas.3
According to the 1840 census, John and Lucy probably had two daughters born between 1825 and 1830. Their daughter Mary Jane was born in 1828. It is assumed that the Eliza, born about 1829, and living in John's household in 1850 was the second daughter. However, I believe that Eliza is not their daughter but rather most likely a first wife of William A. Long. In attempting to find the identify of the John A. Long living with John and Lucy in 1865, I realized that he is the same age as the John A. McVey living with them in 1850. Looking for McVey's in the Illinois State Marriage Index, I discovered an Aaron B. McVey married Nancy Long on 8 August 1844 in Madison County. Aaron is living as a boarder with the Brace family in Greene County, Illinois in 1850 suggesting that his wife Nancy had died. He married again in 1854 to Mary Ann Southerland in Greene County. I believe it likely that John and Lucy's second daughter was Nancy who married Aaron B. McVey in 1844, gave birth to a son John A., born about 1846, and died before 1850. John and Lucy Long raised that grandson John A. McVey, who later took the name John A. Long.3,4,2
