ChartsAncestry of David Kipp Melat
Elias G. Engle was born circa 25 August 1803 in Pennsylvania.1 He married Elizabeth Shoemaker.2 He died on 17 September 1889 in Richland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.1 He was buried in Old Zion Cemetery, Mariasville, Richland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.1
While it is not know for certain, Elias G. Engle was probably the same Elias Engle born to Henry and Catherine Engle of Berks and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania. This Elias was born on 22 October 1802 and baptised 30 January 1803 according to the Goshenhoppen [Catholic] Register.3 Elias G. Engle was living in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1820.4 He was living in Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania, by 1830.5,6 He moved to Venango County, Pennsylvania, in 1841.7 He purchased one hundred seventy-nine acres of farmland in Richland Township, Venango County.7 He and Elizabeth Engle continued to live in Richland Township where Elias farmed.8,9,10,11 He and Elizabeth Shoemaker raised Charles Sumner Engle.9,10 According to the 1870 census, Elias G. Engle and Elizabeth Engle were living in Venango City Borough, Venango County, along with the son Jacob. It is not clear to this researcher where Venango City Borough was located but it does not appear to be the same as the Venango Borough which was located in what is now Southside Oil City. According to the census the post office for Venango City Borough was Porterfield, which was located in Richland Township. Neighbors listed in the census are also consistent with Richland Township names.10,12
