Albert Redmond
Albert Redmond was born on 15 February 1897 in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Victor Marcellus Gardner and Catherine Biddle.1,2 He married Myrtle Arvilla Thomas, daughter of Samuel Miller Thomas and Claudia Ann Winters, on 23 June 1916 in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.1,3,4 He died on 4 June 1974 in Oil City Hospital, Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania, at age 77.5 He was buried in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens, Cranberry Township, Venango County.2
Albert was raised by Albert Redman and his wife Mary Margaret Haggerty in Nashannock Falls, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. According to Albert's daughters, in the 1930s, Albert determined that they should be aware of his birth family. Going back to Lawrence County, Albert discovered that his birth mother was Catherine Biddle of New Castle, and his birth father was a Mr. Gardner. Albert's birth parents were not married so to avoid the stigma of having a child out of wedlock, the baby boy was given to Albert and Mary Redman, who, having no children, raised him as their own. When Albert went to New Castle to track down his family, he discovered that his mother Catherine had recently died; however, his grandfather John Wesley Biddle was still living. Albert visited him several times before he died in 1943 and met several of his aunts and uncles.1,6,7
Because of the certainty of the connection to Albert's maternal family, data on the Biddle family is included in this database. Since Albert never provided the first name of his father there is no similar certainty as to his paternal family. However, a review of census records show the Victor Gardner family enumerated next to the John W. Biddle family in the 1900 census. Victor's sons appear to have been too young to be Albert's father, yet it seems likely that Victor himself was Albert's father. While there is no proof that Victor was Albert's father, given the circumstantial evidence, this researcher maintains that it is likely. For the purposes of this database, it will be noted that Victor Gardner is possibly the father of Albert Redmond. Albert Redmond was raised by Albert Redmond and Mary Margaret Haggerty.8
Albert Redmond was a laborer in the creamery in Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in 1910.9
Albert and Myrtle were living in the Mason apartments in Volant, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, following their wedding.4 Albert and Myrtle were living in Mill Street, Volant, in 1920 where Albert worked as a laborer in a brickyard. According to his draft card from 1918, he was employed by Youngstown Clay Product Company in Volant.10,11
Albert and Myrtle moved to Rouseville, Venango County in about 1921 where they lived on the second floor of the Anderson Inn. A short time later they moved to a house on Grandview Road in Oil City. In 1952, they moved into a modern house they had built on Park Avenue in Oil City.1
Albert was employed by Pennzoil Company when he and his family first moved to Venango County. He later opened and operated Al's Radiator Repair Shop in his garage on Grandview Road in Oil City. He retired in 1962.1,12
Albert and Myrtle were members of the Second Presbyterian Church in Oil City.1 Albert was a member of the Masonic Lodge.1

Charles Henry Phillips was born on 2 June 1862 in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.1 He was the son of Charles Phillips and Alice Fish.2,3 He married Emeline Motter, daughter of Augustus Adolf Motter and Eliza Jane Winger, on 28 August 1884 in Christ Episcopal Church, Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania.4 He died on 19 April 1936 in Oil City at age 73.1 He was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City.1
According to the 8 September 1882 issue of the Oil City Blizzard, "Charles Phillips of this city, started for Warren, this morning, in search of a young lady and a minister. He will return a Benedict." A benedict refers to a recently married man, especially one who seemed to be a confirmed bachelor. Since he did not marry for two more years, it seems that his late 1882 journey was not successful.5
Charles Henry Phillips was a building contractor in Oil City.1 He and Emeline operated Phillip's Grocery Store on Grandview Road, Oil City. Emma continued to run the store after Charles died. She retired in 1938.4,6,7
